Tropical forest restoration under future climate change

چکیده

Abstract One of the most promising ways to rapidly remove CO 2 from atmosphere is through restoration tropical forests. Ongoing and future climate change may, however, threaten permanence carbon stored restoration. Excessive heat, drought or increased disturbances such as wildfire could all negatively impact integrity restored carbon. To investigate these risks forest restoration, we performed 221 simulations with a dynamic global vegetation model (LPJ-LMfire) driven by range scenarios ecophysiological responses concentrations. We show that in forests largely preserved under entire potential climates, regardless assumptions make about for fertilization photosynthesis. Restoring even half area can account 56–69% storage, depending on whether areas are selected low cost high gain.

Forest restoration in a mixed-ownership landscape under climate change.

The extent to which current landscapes deviate from the historical range of natural variability (RNV) is a common means of defining and ranking regional conservation targets. However, climate-induced shifts in forest composition may render obsolete restoration strategies and conservation targets based on historic climate conditions and disturbance regimes. We used a spatially explicit forest ec...

Tropical forest recovery and restoration

R a week goes by without a news report sounding the alarm of the continued destruction of tropical forests and the concomitant loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, such as water retention, erosion control and carbon storage. Much of tropical deforestation, particularly in Latin America, is a result of land clearing for pasture and other agricultural uses1. Increasingly, these lands are ...

Forecasting the Future Risk of Barmah Forest Virus Disease under Climate Change Scenarios in Queensland, Australia

BACKGROUND Mosquito-borne diseases are climate sensitive and there has been increasing concern over the impact of climate change on future disease risk. This paper projected the potential future risk of Barmah Forest virus (BFV) disease under climate change scenarios in Queensland, Australia. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We obtained data on notified BFV cases, climate (maximum and minimum tempe...

Diverging Responses of Tropical Andean Biomes under Future Climate Conditions

Observations and projections for mountain regions show a strong tendency towards upslope displacement of their biomes under future climate conditions. Because of their climatic and topographic heterogeneity, a more complex response is expected for biodiversity hotspots such as tropical mountain regions. This study analyzes potential changes in the distribution of biomes in the Tropical Andes an...

Modeling Current and Future Potential Distributions of Caspian Pond Turtle (Mauremys caspica) under Climate Change Scenarios

Although turtles are the most threatened taxonomic group within the reptile class, we have a very limited understanding of how turtles respond to climate change. Here, we evaluated the effects of climate changes on the geographical distribution of Caspian pond turtle (Mauremys caspica). We used an ensemble approach by combining six species distribution models including artificial neural network...
